What if Jane Goodall had kicked some ass?

I've long admired Jane Goodall and the bond she built with chimpanzees. That quiet courage and determination stayed with me, so much so that I found myself wondering: what if someone with that same compassion also had to fight back?

That question became the heart of this novel.

It's a story shaped by my childhood in East Africa, my love of adventure stories and my deep dislike of those who treat animals as trophies. But more than anything, it's a very human story.

At its centre is a young woman whose relationship with a family of chimpanzees changes her life in ways she could never have imagined. There is danger, romance and a relentless fight to protect what matters most. I hope it will make you laugh, hold your breath and perhaps see both people and animals a little differently.

And, without giving anything away, I think you'll find the ending worth the journey.

KIND WORDS

Linda Newbury

 -Author of ‘One True Thing’

"Readers will be rooting for Angel and her chimpanzee companions against the pitiless invaders as the situation becomes ever more dangerous. This was my introduction to an author with a thorough knowledge and passionate feeling for animal issues; I’m now eager to read his earlier novel, The Wager and the Bear."

Ruth Padel

-Author of Tigers in Red Weather and Where the Serpent Lives

"Harrowing, exciting, compassionate — and despite its ingenious twist,  reflects all too accurately the difficulties conservationists face, everywhere, all the time"

Peter Perves

-TV Presenter

"From the very first line this book draws you into the action. You instantly suspend any disbelief and are thrilled at the intensity of the narrative. John Ironmonger has a pleasing and amusing style of writing, and the book is an exciting and pacey read."
